History:Since every single wiki on this game skimps on any and all plot details, I'm just gona lay it down here myself.
Boktai: The Sun is In Your Hand
"In a place not too far from here and now... The End of the World approaches... The Undead appear, breaking the natural cycle of life and death. The evolution of species ceases... and one by one they become extinct. In the age of darkness in which people have forgotten the sun, the "Immortals"—the beings of the dark—have appeared and turned San Miguel, the City of the Sun, into a land of death. The dark curse has turned all species into the "undead". "Dark matter" has brought about the "undeadening" of all life. The man who was known as the strongest vampire hunter has fallen, and the people's hopes have been shattered. But one day, a boy left San Miguel to avenge his murdered father. This boy is Django—the heir of the solar gun "Gun Del Sol" and the last hope for humanity. In him flows the blood of the greatest vampire hunter of all time. He heads for Istrakan—the City of Death, to pursue his father's murderer. Can Django avenge his father's death with the use of sunlight as his weapon? Can he stop the undeadening that threatens the lives of all? Can he bring back Our Sun?"
Thus the stage for the game is set, with Django apporaching the city and Otenko appearing before him to help guide him on his quest. Together the storm the city, brave the undead, and find the Count- only to find that it was a decoy, and the real Count is elsewhere, having recovered from his fight with Ringo and kidnapped the Moon Beauty, Mani (We'll later find out that this is Django's mother. Otenko is aware of this, but right now she's just the standard damsel in distress). They go after the Count, finding him further along the road. Django then proceeds to lay waste to the Count and rescue a girl, but it is not the Moon Beauty, but rather the caretaker of the Solar Tree, Lita. They go to purify the Countm, and with his dying breath, he reveals that the real Moon Beauty has been taken far to the North to be a sacrifice for the "Queen", and in order to get there, Django must defeat two Immortal guardians who have sealed the path onwards. Naturally, they decide to press on...
...For all of ten feet before they're stopped by a boy who looks a lot like Django, only purple. Turns out that this is the Dark Boy, Sabata. He claims to be neither friend nor foe to Django, but wants him against proceeding, as the death of Ringo has already been avenged, and it is useless to go on, as all life is doomed to turn undead anyway. Otenko is quick to deny him and declare that they'll fight anyway. And then Sabata leaves, knowing that it's useless to argue. And so, Django and Otenko continue, being watched by Sabata all the way as they purify the two Immortals, during which Sabata gives them their next lead: Sol City, the aincent floating capital build by the Solar Children.
Making their way to the top of Sol City, they catch a hint of conversation from behind a closed door, revealing the Sabata has been working with Immortals to some end. The Dark Boy catches them outside, but does not attack, instead merely stating that the immortal Carmilla is waiting for them. Sensing it's a trap, Otenko heads in first, only to be greeted by an Immortal basilisk, petrified, and promptly shattered into stony pieces. Django follows in after and defeats the Immortal, after which Sabata guides him to the Dark Castle, a space station where all the bosses are somehow revived, and their power being used to push the station towards the moon so that the sacrifice to the Queen may take place. So, naturally, Django gives chase to purify them once again, along the way discovering his Lunar blood and the fact that Sabata is in fact his brother. Go figure.
Once the Immortals are purified for a second time, Sabata reveals that he was just playing Django to get power for himself and get rid of those pesky Immortals, at which point he attacks. Of course, this plan is quickly put to an end after two solar-powered bitchslaps upside the head, and Sabata relents. As a bonus, Otenko comes back, revealing that he was merely sealed inside Sabata instead of being dead. So the three of them go to face the Queen, Hel, who has fused with the Moon Beauty Mani in order to kill everything and get rid of life, because life is fleeting and overly-ambitious and dangerous, unlike the stable, timeless Immortals and Undead, and that the will of the Galaxy demanded this course of action. Of course, one sunny, hammy speech from Otenko and one Piledriver-induced beating from the Solar Boy and Dark Boy later, and Hel is destroyed, saving the world. Credits roll, everyone is happy.
Boktai 2: Solar Boy Django
"Once Sun and Moon retreat into darkness, grand twilight descends on the wedge-binding City of the Sun. A deep shadow is then born in its wake. The beginning of the end."
The second game begins with Otenko and Django returning to his hometown of San Miguel, the city of the Sun. The undeadening did not stop with Hel, and has been steadily taking over the city, most notably by the Darkness Tree, a nightmarish plant that has taken root under the streets of San Miguel, poisoning the water supply and blocking off routes. They arrive with little resistance, but just outside the gate, a vampire appears, attacking Django, stealing the Gun Del Sol, and shooting him with it. This shouldn't be possible, according to Otenko, as only a Solar Child may use it, but it happens anyway. The vampire runs off with the gun before inflicting any more damage.
Undaunted, they continue on, setting up base in the market square and rescuing a few of the locals to help. Now equipped with the Sol de Vice, a magic sun gauntlet to replace his Gun del Sol, he goes forth to figure out what's going on.
Long story short, four more Immortals are at work here: the Great Moth Duneyrr, the Origin of the Darkness tree Durathror, and the Sea Beast Dvalinn, all led by the Shadow, Black Dainn. They are all working to end life by releasing the beast sealed under San Miguel: Jormungandr. And so, Otenko leads Django to go hand out sunburns to the Immortals and Undead like cheap candy at a parade.
Alogn the way, they meet Sabata once again, though this time as a friend. With his help, they manage to track down that fifth Immortal- the strange vampire that stole the Gun Del Sol. Turns out it's actually Otenko's previous charge, and Django and Sabata's father: Ringo, who was not, in fact, killed by the Count of Groundsoaking Blood, but rather turned. He attacks Django, biting him to turn him as well, and at the same time a mysterious shadowy hand comes to take Otenko away to be sealed inside an injured cat that Django's been following the entire game. However, tasting Djgano's Lunar blood, which can somewhat resit vampirification, causes Ringo to come to his senses, and he allows Sabata to go to purify Django.
Unfortunately, while Sabata manages it at great cost to himself, being weak to sunlight and the Piledriver, Django still emerges as a vampire, though he still keeps his thoughts. He still makes the best of the situation, using his newfound dark powers to go and purify Durathor. But again, the Piledriver uses sunlight, and vimpires don't like that, so Django nearly dies, as well, saved only by the power of optimism and friendship. Suddenly he's human again, and can change freely between human and vampire forms. Fun times.
This victory doesn't last long, however, as Black Dainn possesses Ringo and tricks Django into releasing the final seal to free Jormundandr. Django, not liking this, tears the Dainn-possessed Ringo a shiny, skin-cancerous new one, Ringo even regaining himself at the last moment to ensure Dainn goes down with him. Along with this, that aforementioned cat recovers enough to undergo the separation process to free Otenko, everyone in the town gets pumped up to reseal this Jormungandr, and Otenko and Django proceed underground to teach the eldritch beast a new meaning of the word "sun-bleached", weakening it enough to seal it once again.
Personality: Otenko is, true to his form, the definition of a sunny disposition and a bit of a ham to boot. Throughout both games, he remains enthusiastically optimistic even in the face of cataclysmic danger, constantly reassuring those around him that, no matter how dark things may seem, with spirit and will things shall turn out alright, all summed up in his trademark, voice-acted phrase "The Sun will rise tomorrow!" Nothing is able to cause him to falter, even as he lays dying on the floor in more than one instance. He's been around a while, and has seen Solar Boy after Solar Boy overcome even the faintest of odds to save the day from Immortals in times past. His spirit is well-justified.
Otenko uses this optimism to act as a mentor to Django, guiding him through his journey just like he did with his father, Ringo. However, his teaching style is decidedly hands-off, and while he will give hints at various places in both games, he never outright gives Django the solution to any problem instead preferring to let him puzzle it out and learn on his own, intervening only to point in a general direction. This extends into the story, as well, as Otenko withholds quite a bit of information from Django regarding his past and those they encounter, only revealing it once he finds out for himself or if it is necessary.
Despite taking the appearance of a seemingly-delicate sunflower, Otenko wastes no opportunity to be a total ham. His (frequent) motivational speeches are extremely spirited in tone and all his lines of voiced dialogue are said with an enthusiastic, manly gusto, both in english and Japanese, especially the intense "TAIIYOOOOHHH" that sounds when he summons a Piledriver.
All said, however, that same optimism does lead him into moments of rash decision-making. In the first game, he did at one point try to order Django to eliminate Sabata on the spot after hearing him converse with Immortals, and throughout the game, talking to Otenko will often result in him urging you in the right direction where to go next, along with something of a "there's no time to lose!" or "We must act quickly!". Otenko is very much a flower-sun-spirit-man-thing of action, and if there's a goal in sight, Otenko will waste no time in urging Django toward it. Of course, it is up to the Solar Boy to decide the pace, but Otenko does make his opinion known.
Strengths: Otenko has a number of abilities that serve to assist Django in canon, listed below:
Piledriver: Otenko's most important ability in aiding the Solar Boy is the summoning of the Piledriver, a device used to purify Immortals by amplifying the Sun's energy. However, Otenko cannot use the Piledriver himself, instead relying on someone with Solar blood (Django, and in one case his brother Sabata) to use it appropriately. In some instances, Otenko can interface with it himself to power it up further, as in the fight against Hel in Boktai 1. The Piledriver must be summoned in a large area that receives direct sunlight, and cannot be operated if the sun is not out. In terms of this game, he will be unable to summon the Piledriver without express help from somepony aligned with the Sun (eg, Celestia), and it will be unable to completely purify darkness, instead merely sealing them for some time.
Teleport Rune Otenko is able to create runes on the floor which will allow users to teleport between them. Otenko may only create these near his position, and thus must manually travel to two locations in order to set them up. In addition, each rune is exclusively connected to one other, and the two have a limited range. The summoning itself takes some time, and cannot be executed in rooms with an imminent threat present. In MLJ, Otenko shall only be able to create one set at any given time and must be present for anypony to use them.
Sunlight Channeling: In certain dire instances, Otenko is able to channel the sun's rays to another location, including deep, deep underground. This... really does nothing other than make the sun shine in odd places, but can be useful in conjunction with the Solar Boy.
Immortality: Otenko's physical manifestation may be killed or destroyed, but as he is the Spirit of the Sun, he cannot truly be killed, and will come back when needed. The process takes time, however, and cannot happen if he has been sealed inside darkness. Immortality will not be a factor in-game unless specifically allowed by moderators for the situation (or if his phoenix physiology calls for it).
Weaknesses: Otenko, is, as stated, a supportive being. He cannot fight on his own, and prolonged exposure to Darkness weakens him. He is a floating sunflower, after all. He can do impressive feats, but not without some sort of assistance, whether it be from the Solar Boy or anyone that can protect him. In addition, being a spirit means that he is vulnerable to being sealed by darkness, which eliminates his ability to resurrect. However, destroying or defeating the being sealing him shall release him.
Possessions: None. He is merely the will of the Sun and more a spirit than a corporeal being, thus he has no need for material possessions.
Pony/Animal Type: Phoenix. Otenko is an aspect of the Sun rather than being a living being in of himself, playing a guiding and supporting role to select humans rather than acting by himself. Thus, he does not see himself as humans who, in this game, would become ponies, and thus takes an alternate form, symbolizing his relationship with the sun by taking the form of a respective creature associated with the sun in Equestria: the phoenix.
Cutie Mark: N/A
Pony Picture: Otenko's phoenix form is primarily a sunny yellow, with some darker orange plumage around the neck that, when puffed out, resembles the petals of a sunflower. In addition, his talons are a chlorophyll-green color, and in addition to looking perpetually on fire as most phoenixes are, will glow slightly when in contact with strong sunlight.

First Person: Well now, I can't say I foresaw an event such as this. Surely not the work of the Immortals, but that only raises further questions.
[Otenko contemplates this for a moment, but quickly dismisses it. Now was not the time to dwell on what he was taken away from.]
No matter. I'm sure young Django can handle himself without me for a while. He has done so before, and has never disappointed me. He has many friends to helm him, after all! As for me, this is a grand opportunity to do some adventuring on my own! After all, the sun shines here, as well! It gives life to the earth, and so long as that is so, I have nothing to fear! So onwards, to adventure, and discovery! May the sun be with me!
...But first, I suppose I should prioritize one rather large and burning question:
Why am I a bird?
Third Person: After that enthusiastic declaration to a magical piece of paper was done with, it was time to go. The only question is where? He had no leads, no sense of where he was, and no contacts to help. Oh well. Gotta start somewhere.
However, it wasn't long before the gravity of the situation started to catch up with him. What would Django do? He can't summon the Piledriver himself, and there were still more Immortals to purify! If he didn't get back to him soon enough... No, no. Don't focus on what you can't control. Focus on what you can figure out and do. That was a lesson he had taught Django and Ringo, and now it was one to follow himself. Sure, he was worried, but things will turn out alright. Django's a spirited boy. There was nothing to do other than put trust in him and carry on, so carry on he will. Figure out what he can. He appeared to be in the middle of a small town, inhabited by ponies. Strange, but they look civilized. A quick look up at the sun told him it was about... 9:30 in the morning. Yes, about that time. He'll keep track of it throughout the day to determine the season, though a nearby tree, lush and green with leaves, indicated late summer. And all of that is assuming the sun behaves the same here as it does on Earth.
Well, not more than two minutes of looking and already he knew much more about his situation than he previously did. Maybe going to converse with one of those ponies out and about would shed more light on the situation. This was no time to be shy, and so off he goes!
Splat
...Or not. He doesn't even take a step and he manages to fall beak-first on the ground. Okay, so maybe he actually has to flap his wings to move instead of being able to just float. No matter, it's all a learning experience!
